Notes for Guidance
1. Your report should contain a balance of theoretical
material/understanding of concepts, up-to-date information and application of
this material to the example of FDI in question, as appropriate. Answers which are purely textbook-based will
not adequately answer the questions.
Equally, answers which are purely descriptive and contain little understanding
of the issues involved will not be sufficient.
2.
Your answers to each of the tasks should be carefully presented in the
form of a report. The term ‘report’ may be interpreted fairly loosely to mean a
concisely written document, divided into sections with appropriate
sub-headings, which has an introduction and conclusion and is easy to follow. It is not necessary to use prescriptive
headings such as ‘terms of reference’, ‘procedure’, ‘findings’ etc. As this is a general type of report (without
a specific recipient), your own subject headings may be more appropriate.
3.
Clear, neat presentation is important. Your report should also be
word-processed. Take care with spelling,
punctuation and grammar. These can easily spoil an otherwise well-presented
report.
4. Your report should contain a reference to indicate the sources used and,
if quotations, statistics, terms, diagrams, etc. are taken directly from
published sources, These sources should be properly referenced.
6. Beware of plagiarism! Using all
or part of another person’s work is clearly unacceptable. Equally, using
textbooks or articles too closely, without proper referencing, is not permissible.
7. When selecting an example of international company, choose one which
offers plenty of scope and about which there is sufficient information readily
available. Examples of companies involved in FDI can be found in the following
industries: motor manufacturing, steel, electrical and electronic goods,
chemicals, oil, retailing, banking, IT services and software, financial
services, civil aviation, soft drinks, brewing, confectionery, travel and
tourism, utilities and a number of other industries.
8. Possible sources of information
include books, academic and professional journals, quality newspapers, and a
large variety of websites (though remember that some websites are more reliable
than others). Avoid referencing
Wikipedia as this is not always a reliable source.
