Portfolio – AS INFORMED COMMENTARY^
A portfolio can be
seen as both a product (a collection of documents, work records in a variety
of mediums) and a process (a continuous and systematic approach to reflect on
personal and professional experience and obtain feedback from this experience
to support learning performance).
Morrison (1996) provides an
informative model towards the development of a learning portfolio for
postgraduate students to develop their understanding of ‘reflective
practice’. The model has two designated aspects: a) reflection in/on practice
and b) empowerment resulting from this reflection.
^ The informed
commentary is split into three clusters (parts).

Portfolio
A portfolio can
be seen as both a product (a collection of documents, work records in a variety
of mediums) and a process (a continuous and systematic approach to reflect on
personal and professional experience and obtain feedback from this experience
to support learning performance).
As a learning and
assessment tool a learning portfolio:
· Encourages ongoing
reflection and emphasises the importance of critical reflection (Ross, 2009);
·
Encapsulates key
aspects of their learning – successes and failures and;
·
Requires students to
apply concepts or ideas to topics of which they have unique knowledge and/or
experience;
·
Includes an oral
component in the presentation of the portfolio - Part B (Burch & Seggie,
2008);
·
Helps form an action
plan for future learning.
Instructions:
Learning Portfolio Structure
Guidelines (PARTS A+B+C):
A. Choose a format that you feel
comfortable to keep notes, sketches, diagrams, blogs created and other types of
media you deem necessary. For example, a bound sketch book or diary or journal
or a document stored in a cloud environment;
B. Place/keep all your information for
PARTS 1 and 2 ONLY. To be sighted in class by lecturer (approx.1,000
words for PART1 and approx. 1,000 words for PART 2)
An oral presentation is required for Part B: this will be a
short overview of the findings as per the assessment outline for Part B. Each
student will provide an informal overview of 5-10 minutes duration during their
tutorial class in weeks 6 and 7 (if required). Students will submit their
assessment via Turnitin.
C.
Produce
a word document as per Case Study format (APA 6th) that
addresses PART 3 ONLY. To be submitted via Turnitin. The word length is 3000
words.
