AHRMP Question

Scenario:

You are the HR Manager of a large company that sells electronics, computers, phones and tablets as well as computer software products. The products can be purchased in-store and online. The company which has over 50,000 employees consists of several offices, call-centres, manufactures, distribution centres and stores which are located in various locations around the world. The retail industry has tight competition and sales are greatly affected by the recession. Having recently attended a conference about the advantages of developing a learning organisation, your company’s HR Director believes that becoming a learning organisation may give the company a competitive edge. You are asked to look further into the concept of a learning organisation to determine how the organisation can become a learning organisation and whether this will or will not be of benefit to your organisation (not ignoring the current economic climate and costs involved).
Task:

Write a report of 12,000 words to the HR Director that:

a)     Critically evaluates the concept of ‘learning organisation’ by carrying out a comprehensive search of theoretical and practitioner literature.

b)    Demonstrate in the light of your discussion in task 1 whether the concept of learning organization can bring value to the above case organization.

c)     Propose a strategy and action plan for transforming your organisation into a learning organisation keeping in mind the impact, time, costs involved and any relevant information,

In Class Discussion questions:

1.     What is a ‘learning organisation’? How do we identify a ‘learning organisation’?
2.     What are the benefits associated with having a ‘learning organisation’? Are there any costs involved? What are the criticisms of the ‘learning organisation’ concept?
3.     What are the challenges associated with transforming a large, multi-national company into a learning organisation and how can this be achieved?

Guide on how the AHRMP Tutorial may work:

1.     First students are presented with a problem

2.     Students discuss the problem in a small group PBL tutorial. They clarify the facts of the case. They define what the problem is. They brainstorm ideas based on the prior knowledge. They identify what they need to learn to work on the problem, what they do not know (learning issues). They reason through the problem. They specify an action plan for working on the problem.

3.     Students engage in independent study on their learning issues outside the tutorial. The information sources they draw on include: library, databases, the web and resource people
4.     They come back to the PBL tutorial (s) sharing information, peer teaching and working together on the problem

5.     They present and discuss their solution to the problem

6.     They review what they have learnt from working on the problem. All who participated in the process engage in self, peer and tutor review of the PBL process and each person’s contribution to that process.

The role of the tutor is to facilitate the proceedings (helping the chair to maintain group dynamics and moving the group through the task) and to ensure that the group achieves appropriate learning objectives in line with those set by curriculum design team. The tutor should encourage students to check their understanding of the material. He or she can do this by encouraging the students to ask open questions and ask each other to explain topics in their own words or by the use of drawings and diagrams.
