ASSIGNMENT 1: INDIVIDUAL ACADEMIC RESEARCH ESSAY (25%) – EXTENDED
ADVICE
Students are to research and write an academic
essay of 2000 words in length (excluding references).
You need to identify an IHRM topic that
interests you (from the topics you have covered so far in the trimester i.e.
one of the following ...
1.
The Cultural Context of IHRM
2.
The Organisational Context of IHRM
3. IHRM in Cross-Border M&A, International Alliances and SMEs
4. Sourcing HR for Global Markets: Staffing, Recruitment and Selection
Your choice may be broad or narrow in focus.
1. e.g. “International
staffing recruitment and selection” or a specific component of staffing
recruitment and selection …
2. e.g. “cultural
management research” or a specific research topic in cultural management
studies (e.g. the implications of Hofstede).
You should explore your chosen topic in-depth to
answer the question … ‘How does this topic shape contemporary IHRM
practice?’
Write an academic
research essay responding to this broad question.
This requires you to research your chosen topic
and create a logical, evidence-based argument about what IHRM managers need to
prioritise related to this topic. For that reason, before you start, please
ensure that there is enough relevant academic literature available in the
library databases to discuss your chosen topic there is, just make sure you
know where to find it.
The following structure is suggested
…..
1. Outline of area of study e.g. Culture/MNC
context/ international recruitment etc. & the implications for contemporary
IHRM practice.
2. Review of key HR literature on the topic (and
provide an explanation why this literature is chosen as the key literature).
3. Critically appraise the implications/influence
on contemporary practice i.e. explain the so what? Why do international HR managers need to know this and what are the
implications for what managers in multinational companies actually do in
relation to your chosen area of IHRM?
This is a research essay requiring you to search
academic journals and other sources (quality is better than quantity).
You should primarily search the academic
journals listed below.
International Journal of Human Resource
Management
Journal of International Business Studies
International Business Review
Management International Review
Journal of World Business
Journal of Global Mobility

If you feel it is appropriate, you may use other
journals if you consider the journal content to be a relevant and quality
source for your assignment.
A minimum of eight (8) journal reference sources
will help you write a more complete paper, if all the sources are relevant. It
is preferable that your journal sources be no
older than 10 years and,
definitely, no earlier than 2000,
unless you can really see the implications for contemporary IHRM from an old source.
