Supplementary Assessment

MGMT20140

Design It

Term 2 2018

Supplementary Assessment

This is an INDIVIDUAL piece of work to be submitted as a supplementary assessment for MGMT20140 in T2 2018. In order to pass this supplementary assessment, you are required to demonstrate your understanding of the unit contents and your ability to APPLY the skills you should have developed during the course of this unit. Your task is two fold:

1. You are required to prepare a VISUALISATION of your choosing (e.g. a poster, or a storyboard, or a journey map, or a video, etc.), which must visualise your own personal key learning about the design mindset (this requires reflection and reference to literature).

2. You are then also required to prepare a brief explanatory REPORT, in which you must explain your visualisation AND justify your reasons for choosing the specific visualisation approach(es) you chose (this also requires reference to literature).
In order to be successful in this task, you need to research the academic literature about the design mindset and visualisation in Design Thinking (you will have done some of this already for your other assignments) AND you need to reflect upon your own personal development throughout this unit (again, you should have done this for other assignments).

You must then combine your reading of the literature with your personal reflection in the form of a meaningful visualisation (do not use more than 300 words) that tells the viewer about your one key learning (hint: we are looking for ONE key learning only, NOT everything you have learnt – you need to prioritise). You must then write a brief report (700 words +/- 10%), which explains your visualisation AND the reasons why you chose your specific approach(es) to visualisation.

The visualisation must contain a MINIMUM of 5 scholarly, peer-reviewed references; these must be included as in-text references WITHIN the visualisation itself. The report must contain a further MINIMUM of 5 scholarly, peer-reviewed references as in-text references. At the end of your report, you should provide a reference list (APA style) with ALL references you have used in the submission. If you want, you can include a separate reference list in your visualisation itself, but for this supplementary assessment, that is not a requirement.

The visualisation should be as self-explanatory as possible, but whatever is unclear on the visualisation needs to be clarified in the report. The report should be structured in a suitable manner (you choose the headings and sub-headings) and presented in a professional report format (title page, exec summary, TOC, etc.). Both visualisation and report should make use of 1st person writing.
Please note: BOTH visualisation and report need to be submitted in order to pass. Only submitting one of these components will result in a fail grade.

This supplementary assessment (SA) will determine whether you will pass the subject – a fail grade in the SA will mean a fail grade for the entire unit! Please note that detailed feedback will not be provided.

Submission format: Report – WORD document

Visualisation – please choose an appropriate format, e.g. PPT, YouTube link, WORD document, etc. Please ensure markers can actually open the document though (please don’t use obscure formats)

Return to students: The overall result will be available in Moodle within a few days of submission.

Late submission: Penalties will be applied to this SA in line with the university policy.
Academic Misconduct: Again, penalties will be applied should academic misconduct be present.

The assessment criteria for this supplementary assessment are as follows:

 Demonstrate understanding of Design Thinking and design mindset by providing suitable and correct information in the submission 20%

 Demonstrate a breadth and quality of research by using a minimum of 10 suitable, highquality, academic sources throughout the submission 10%

 Correct use of the APA referencing system in-text AND in the reference list 10%

 Demonstrate prioritising and summarising skills by displaying a clear and concise message on the visualisation and in the report 10%

 Ability to effectively use structure, aesthetics and layout to ensure the visualisation is effective and the report is professional 10%

 Demonstrate synthesis skills by applying literature to own personal reflection 20%

 Demonstrate self-reflective skills by clearly presenting YOUR PERSONAL learning in the submission 20%
