Part Two: Internal and External
Environments (41 marks, 15%)
Select an organisation you are familiar with as a focus for
this part of the assignment. It might be somewhere that you are a customer or
where you have worked, or an organisation you have knowledge of through books,
articles or the Internet. Based on your knowledge, complete these tasks:
Base questions one to four on tools such as PESTLE or
STEEPLE analysis or Porter’ s Five Forces.
Note that culture referred to in questions five to eight is
organisational culture, rather than ethnic culture. Cultural factors are
therefore factors such as the organisation's vision, values, norms, systems,
artefacts, symbols, behaviors, language, assumptions, beliefs, stories and
habits. Examples of cultural factors might include the way staff socialise, the
way leaders drive new initiatives etc.

For the following questions use this scenario:
You are a retail manager for a local
store that is headquartered in Auckland. You have alerted head office that
there has been an increase in shoplifting in your area and it is impacting on
your store. They have invited you to meet with senior management for a strategy
meeting at headquarters. Store security has been flagged as a strategic issue
for the company. When you return to your store, you discuss the new strategy in
an operational meeting and create plans to combat shoplifting, implement your
plans, alongside the required control processes.
In a team of 3-4, discuss this scenario in order to address
the following questions. There is no written component for this part of the
assessment – you will present your findings back to the class as if the class
is the senior management team, and be marked on your oral presentation. Feel
free to “flesh out” the scenario – you might want to identify the type of
retail store and the type of goods that are being stolen. Might staff be
involved?
6. Outline the strategy for dealing with shoplifting (3
marks).
7. Outline briefly your operational plan for dealing with
shoplifting (4 marks).
8. Describe briefly how you will implement your plans (4
marks).
9. Describe the control methods you will use, both to reduce
